Community Guidelines

How we expect members to treat each other.

Elevate Debate exists so people can disagree well. These guidelines explain what that looks like here, and what happens when someone falls short. They sit alongside our Terms of Use.

1

Argue the point, not the person

Challenge ideas as hard as you like. Do not attack the people who hold them. Insults, name-calling, mocking someone's background, and piling on a single member are not debate.

2

Be honest

  • Do not invent facts, quotes or sources.
  • If you were wrong, say so. Changing your mind is a good outcome.
  • Do not pretend to be someone else, and do not run several accounts to back yourself up.
3

No hate, threats or harassment

Content that threatens, harasses or demeans people because of who they are, including their race, religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age, is not allowed. Neither are threats of violence or encouraging others to harm someone.

4

Keep it legal and safe

  • No illegal content, and nothing that exposes a person's private details, such as their address, phone number or workplace.
  • No graphic or sexual content.
  • Only post work you have the right to share. Credit your sources.
5

No spam or self-promotion

Do not post adverts, repeated links, or off-topic content. Sharing a source that supports your argument is fine.

6

Stay on topic

Keep arguments and rebuttals about the debate they belong to. Start a new debate if you want to talk about something else.

7

Reporting

If something breaks these guidelines, use the report button on it. Reports are private, and the person you report is not told who made the report. Please do not report a post just because you disagree with it. Use a rebuttal for that.

8

What happens when a rule is broken

A moderator reviews each report. Depending on what happened, they may leave the content up, remove it, or suspend the account. If we remove something of yours or suspend your account, we email you and tell you why. If you think we got it wrong, contact us and we will look again.
