How to get the most from Elevate Debate.

Welcome to Elevate Debate. This guide walks you through the platform, whether you are visiting for the first time or have been a member for a while.

Getting Started

Anyone can read debates and blog posts. A free account lets you start debates, make arguments, vote, write articles and message other members.

  1. Choose Sign Up at the top right of any page.
  2. Enter your email, a username and a password.
  3. Confirm your email with the six-digit code we send you.
  4. Log in any time with Log in. If you forget your password, use Forgot password on the login page.

Finding Your Way Around

  • Main menu. Home, Debates, Topics, Blog and, for members, My Feed, Timeline and Members.
  • Search. The magnifying glass finds debates, arguments, blog posts and members.
  • Your account area. Once you are logged in, a sidebar on the left gives you your profile, feed, followers, messages, notifications and settings.
  • Visitors and members. Visitors can read everything. Members can also take part.

Your Profile and Settings

  • Profile. Add a photo, a cover image and a short bio. Your profile shows your activity, debates and articles.
  • Account Settings. Change your details, password, email notifications and privacy choices. Pick a tab at the top of the page.
  • Username. To change your username, open a support ticket from the Support page.

Taking Part in Debates

  • Start a debate. Choose Start a Debate, write a clear question, add details if you like, and pick a category and topics.
  • Make your case. Open a debate and choose Yes or No, then write your argument.
  • Rebut. Answer other members' arguments directly with a rebuttal.
  • Vote and comment. Use the vote buttons to back the points you find strongest.
  • Edit or delete. If you started a debate, you can edit or delete it from its page.

Writing Articles

  • Two blogs. The Official Blog comes from the Elevate Debate team. The Community Blog is written by members.
  • Write an article. Choose Write a Blog from your account menu. Add a title, an optional excerpt, your text, topics, a category and a featured image.
  • Drafts. Choose Save as draft to keep an article private. Open it later from your profile to finish it and publish.
  • Comments. Join the conversation at the bottom of any article.

Following and Messaging

  • Follow members. Visit a profile and choose Follow. Their activity then appears in My Feed.
  • See who follows you. The Following page in your account area lists the people you follow and your followers.
  • Messages. Send private messages to other members from the Messages page or a member's profile.

Notifications

  • The bell. The bell at the top right shows recent activity. The Notifications page keeps the full list.
  • Email. Email notifications are off until you turn them on. Choose what you want under Account Settings, then Notifications.

Privacy and Your Account

  • Private by default. Other members see your username. Your real name and email stay hidden unless you choose to show them.
  • Your choices. Under Account Settings, then Privacy, you can also hide your follower lists and activity, or stop members messaging you.
  • Password. Change it any time under Account Settings, then Email and Password.
