Large Language Models are being utilized to streamline efforts of their users. But is it ultimately beneficial for a student? What is better for learning - a limited set of resources, or an unlimited one? Maybe it's somewhere in-between.
At the outset, no.
As a comparison, students should learn arithmetic without a calculator, because they need to understand the math before just getting the answer. And if they understand the math, then when the time comes for them to do work that requires a calculator, they will have no difficulty learning how to use the calculator.
Similarly, students need to learn how to write and how to research before starting to use ChatGPT, or they will not have any sense of when the AI is failing them. That being said, it is a tool that can probably be used for good things, including efficiency, so it would be helpful to learn how to use it eventually, but not too soon.
